Butterfield Stage, Centennial Run, gateway to Fort Smith, September 18-19, 1958 [View 3] [graphic] / Ernie Deane [photographer]. 1958.

Part of a group of negatives taken for September 19, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Big Crowds Delay Butterfield Stage," B1:2, September 23, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Mail 'Coach' Works Hard to Keep Up," B1:3, and September 29, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Caravan Had Royal Welcome in State," 5F:1. The Overland Mail Centennial caravan commemorates John Butterfield and his Overland Mail Company from the 1860s. Butterfield traveled from Missouri to San Francisco, California, with his Concord Coach to haul passengers and mail. John D. Frizzell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, owns the Butterfield coach and allows the caravan to use it in its retracing of Butterfield's route. The Overland Mail Centennial mobile post office went into action in February of 1941. It actually houses the mail that is picked up along the route, which will be delivered to San Francisco. Various people in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, pose with the Butterfield Stage and the Overland Mail Centennial mobile post office. Postmaster, Wade Bishop of Lincoln, Washington County, Arkansas hands a stack of souvenir mail to William D. Corell of the Post Office Department at Washington, who is standing in the door of the Overland Mail Centennial mobile post office during its trip across Arkansas (0211.10). Lloyd Luginbuel (left) of Lincoln, Washington County, Arkansas welcomes Ben Dixon of San Diego, California, during a Caravan coffee stop (0211.16). Dixon was one of the original history enthusiasts who urged the federal government to give official notice to the Butterfield Centennial.
